This building, which now houses Het Koffiehuisje, served as a shop for the Cooperative Consumption Association, where Philips staff could do their shopping at affordable prices.
Anton Philips founded this cooperative in 1918 with a network of grocery and drugstore stores, butchers, a bread factory and petrol pumps. Anton was annoyed by the reaction of the Eindhoven shopkeepers to a wage increase for the Philips staff. Then they immediately raised the prices of the basic necessities. By becoming a member of the new cooperative, the staff was able to buy at reasonable prices. This building on the corner of Frederiklaan and De Jonghlaan had already been set up as a dairy shop and this is where the cooperative’s first grocery store was established.
Nowadays, people from outside the neighborhood also find their way to the Coffee House. For delicious bread, coffee and much more goodies. To meet up with friends, for a work meeting or a cozy get-together with family.
