The Henri Dunant Park, located in North Eindhoven in the Woensel district, is a vast park of 22 hectares, designed in 1971 to create a green oasis in this then new district. The park was conceived as a lively contrast to the surrounding straight buildings.
The park has certainly fulfilled its purpose, with an abundance of variety in its design. From distant vistas to winding paths and winding patterns, to rectilinear structures, the park offers a diversity of experiences. It also acts as a connecting element between two residential areas, namely De Tempel, in which the park is located, and the Woenselse Heide.
With an abundance of tree species, including poplars, willows, ashes, oaks, chestnuts, and birches, the park offers rich vegetation. The differences in height add even more character to the environment.
But the park is not only a feast for the eyes and a place to walk. At the heart of the park is a large pond, which has also served as a water drainage system for the district since 2010, improving water quality. With this, Eindhoven shows its well-known connection between technological innovation and nature conservation.
The artwork made of tubes stood in the center of Eindhoven until 2010. It is a work of art, 30 meters high, is by artist Frans Gast and is beautifully lit in the evening.
The park offers plenty of opportunities for recreation. From picnicking in the grass to playing in the playground or on the huge mountain, there is something for everyone. Moreover, Speelpark de Splinter is also located in this park, which adds an extra attraction. And for those who want to explore even more greenery, the Aanschotpark and the Aanschotse Beemden in the neighbouring district of Blixembosch offer an extra destination. And during hot days, don’t forget to enjoy a delicious Italian ice cream, which is always available at the ice cream man nearby.
