The orchard on the former estate of the Philips family has a rich history dating back to the 30s of the last century. This piece of land was transformed into an orchard at the time as part of an employment project during the economic crisis. Under the leadership of Anton Philips, Philips employees were able to continue working here, providing them with an income in difficult times. In addition, the orchard provided fruit, which contributed to the healthy diet of the employees.
In the summer, employees were allowed to indicate their preference for pears, apples and plums, which were then fairly distributed during the harvest period and delivered by horse and cart. In the winter, the horse came back to collect the empty crates.
Carlos Faes, the current owner, has revived Mr. Philips’ original idea by restoring and modernizing the orchard. He has further developed the garden to make it less vulnerable, learning a lot from Frits Philips as his mentor. ‘Keep trying to do things differently from others’, was a motto that always stuck with him.
At the moment, the fruit is only sold directly to consumers, as well as to company canteens in the area, including Philips.
Visit the country shop for the best local vegetables, fruits and other products. And while you’re there, don’t forget to enjoy a delicious pancake with fresh fruit from the orchard.
