The Stratumseind is a lively street of 225 meters long that starts at the Catharinakerk and ends at the Dommelbrug, where the Stratum district connects to the center of Eindhoven. In the past, in addition to houses, various businesses were located here, such as a hat shop, notary’s office, butcher’s shop, frame maker and a clothing store.
Nowadays, the Stratumseind is mainly known as the entertainment street of Eindhoven. In the 70s, the non-catering establishments disappeared and made way for more entertainment venues, quickly turning the street into a bustling mix of cafes and clubs.
Despite the modern entertainment function, there are still many historical features to be found in the street. Many buildings date from several hundred years ago. For example, café de Spijker, opposite the church, is located in a building that is more than 300 years old, formerly a metal goods store called ‘De Spijker’. Another striking building is number 42, formerly known as ‘Het Oudt Huys’, a butcher’s shop with a beautiful clock gable from the 16th century. Although the façade collapsed, it was later rebuilt in the same style.
Today, the Stratumseind consists mainly of more than 50 cafes and clubs, making it the longest nightlife street in the Netherlands. On a normal weekend day, at least 6000 to 7000 partygoers can be found here. The busiest days are Friday and Saturday, but on weekdays, especially Thursday, there is a little more space and there are mainly students.
Although the Stratumseind is mainly known for its clubs and bars, other activities also take place there, such as the annual Eindhoven marathon, weekly pub quizzes and the exuberantly celebrated carnival.
Recently, there has been a shift towards a better mix of clubs, bars and restaurants, making the Stratumseind increasingly diverse.
