In 2000, Eindhoven got a new work of art in the open air: The Flying Pins. This colorful artwork is a perfect stop for those who want to admire art and sights in Eindhoven in the fresh air.
The Flying Pins are easily accessible, because they are located opposite Eindhoven Central Station, at the head of the John F. Kennedylaan, diagonally opposite the station. You can walk to the flying cones from here in less than 10 minutes.
Like other sights in Eindhoven, The Flying Pins have their own special meaning. This artwork was made by the Dutch artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. It is one of their first works of art to be unveiled in the open air. They saw the Kennedylaan as a bowling alley because of its length, hence the name derived from the idea of bowling, where the pins have to be knocked over by the ball.
The color of the flying pins also has its own special meaning. The yellow refers to the many daffodils that bloom on the Kennedylaan every spring. This color also symbolizes energy and inspiration, matching the industrial and technological nature of the city. In addition, the yellow offers brightness to the students of the Eindhoven University of Technology, which is located right next to this striking landmark.
As an art lover, it is worth walking past this work of art. It costs nothing and you can admire them 365 days a year.
During the Dutch Design Tour you will cycle past this cheerful work of art.
