The Wasven farm, once an estate with farms and a country house in Tongelre, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The area was originally reclaimed around a fen where sheep were washed before they were sheared, hence the name ‘Wasven’. In the 17th century, the area underwent a renovation and the farm was given the name ‘Hoffken te Tongelre’. The majestic lime trees that were planted at the time still adorn the surroundings of the current farm. In 1872, the original manor house was demolished and replaced by a small castle, in the middle of an enchanting landscape forest that has been preserved to this day. <\/p>\n
In the 1930s, Philips bought the estate with plans to turn it into a convalescent home, but due to the economic crisis, these plans never came to fruition. Nevertheless, a new farm was built on the estate in 1941 by the company. A salvage pond, now known as the ‘Wasven’, was dug for the construction of a neighbourhood. <\/p>\n
In 2006, the farm was acquired by the action group ‘de Beuk erin’ with the aim of preserving the estate and the farm. Today, the area is managed as Wasven, a foundation dedicated to the preservation and sustainable development of the farm and surrounding estate. <\/p>\n
On the site you will find a guesthouse, bakery, coffee roaster, green workshop and a shop. Nature education, horticultural activities and a 3 km long walking route across the estate are among the many possibilities. The foundation also functions as a care farm, where people with intellectual disabilities work together with professionals and volunteers. <\/p>\n
