NRE stands for Nutsbedrijven Regio Eindhoven, a historic energy source that has played a crucial role in the development of Eindhoven since the opening of the first gas factory around 1900. Today, it is one of the oldest and most iconic sites in the city, treasured as cultural heritage. <\/p>\n
The former gas factory, previously located on the Paradijslaan from 1857 to 1899, was moved to a location outside the then city center due to complaints about gas odors. The new location, where the current NRE buildings are located, provided easy access to coal through the canal, a factor that became crucial in building the new plant. The pressure to move was further fueled by Philips, which threatened to build its own gas factory. On July 28, 1899, the foundation stone was laid for the new facility. <\/p>\n
Today, the 11 factory buildings have been transformed into a vibrant city neighborhood where creativity flourishes. The area has become a melting pot of living, working and culture, and is known as an important Design District and the vibrant energy source of modern Eindhoven. <\/p>\n
