The slogan of Eindhoven University of Technology is “Mens agitat molem”, which means “the mind moves the masses”.
Since the end of the Second World War, there had already been a plan to build a second technical university in the Netherlands. Eindhoven presented itself as the ideal location due to its industrial past, although other cities such as Twente and Arnhem also showed interest. However, the existing technical university in Delft was not happy with the loss of its monopoly position. Finally, in 1956, a law was passed that made the establishment of the Eindhoven University of Technology (THE) possible.
The university has more than 10,000 students, 250 professors and 2,847 other employees, working in 11 bachelor’s programmes, 19 master’s programmes and a special bachelor’s programme. In addition to their academic obligations, the students are also active in 33 different student associations.
Together with Delft, Wageningen and Twente, TU/e forms the 4TU federation, which represents the four existing technical universities in the Netherlands.
Several well-known figures have been trained on this campus, including the former CEO of Essent Michiel Boersma, former president of Philips Gerard Kleisterlee and CEO of Shell Marjan van Loon. Well-known (former) professors have also worked here, such as the director of the Van Abbemuseum Jean Leering, the designer of the Vesteda tower Jo Coenen and the inventor of the Philishave Alexandre Horowitz, who was a professor.
There are plans to significantly change the campus in the coming years. It will be renamed “TU/e Science Park”, with a green environment and activities that take place both in the evenings and on weekends. Together with the High Tech Automotive Campus and the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, the TU/e Science Park will fall under the Brainport flag.
During our E-Fatbike tours you will ride along the Dommel over the TU grounds.
