The Philips Stadium, the proud home of football club PSV, derived from Philips Sport Vereniging, is a symbol of sports history in Eindhoven. This imposing stadium now stands on the exact location where a modest sports field was built in 1911 for the residents of the Philips village.
What started as a simple field where local residents kicked a ball quickly grew into a need for stands. In 1916, the Philips Stadium was built, initially with room for 900 spectators. Today, however, the stadium welcomes more than 35,000 enthusiastic fans.
PSV, Eindhoven’s beloved football club, is almost every year a formidable competitor in the race for the Dutch championship. With no fewer than 25 league titles until 2025, PSV is the second most successful club in the Netherlands. The team has also made a name for itself internationally, especially in the seventies and eighties, led by iconic players such as Willy van der Kuijlen and Jan van Beveren.
Thanks to strategic investments, especially by sponsor Philips, PSV grew into a European football giant. With top players such as Ruud Gullit and Ronald Koeman, the club broke through to the top of European football in the eighties. Between 1986 and 1992, PSV won six national titles, three KNVB cups and the coveted European Cup I.
In later years, PSV continued to compete at the European level, with highlights such as reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2024 and 2025 and the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2005 under the leadership of Guus Hiddink.
In addition to football, the Philips Stadium also offers space for various events, including concerts by well-known artists. It is also the place where the popular Dutch singer Guus Meeuwis gave several concerts every year until 2024.
A visit to the PSV museum and a tour of the stadium are highly recommended for lovers of sports and history. End your experience with a drink or lunch at eatery De Verlenging, where you can enjoy a view of the hallowed grass of the Philips Stadium on Frederiklaan.
