The Markt in Eindhoven is not only a historic square, but also the beating heart of the city. With a history dating back to the year 1232, when Eindhoven received city rights, the Markt has played an important role in the development of the city. Traditionally, the square served as a center of commerce and regularly held markets, a tradition that continues to this day. A small antique market still takes place every Saturday, keeping the centuries-old trade spirit alive.
Nowadays, the Markt mainly has a social function, with lively terraces of the existing catering establishments that adorn the square. For the little ones there is a permanent merry-go-round, while on the edge of the square you can find the Heuvelgalerie, an indoor shopping center with various shops and a branch of Holland Casino.
In winter, the Markt transforms into a winter wonderland with a large skating rink in the middle of the square, where both young and old can enjoy the cozy atmosphere and winter fun.
There are also some beautiful monuments to admire around the Market. On Markt 23A is a national monument, a house from 1925 in the style of the Amsterdam School. In addition, there are two municipal monuments, including a former bank building that now houses a KFC, and buildings on Markt 9, 10 and 11 that are integrated into the Heuvelgalerie.
A striking statue on the Markt is that of Frits Philips, an important figure within the Philips family and an iconic personality in the history of Eindhoven. His presence honors the city’s past and connection to Philips’ industrial heritage.
