The Rijksmuseum is coming to Eindhoven, a new chapter in the city of light, design and innovation

Eindhoven has big news. Very big news. The city will have its own branch of the Rijksmuseum. Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem and Rijksmuseum director Taco Dibbits recently announced that an international top museum has deliberately chosen Eindhoven. A historic milestone for the city and for everyone who wants to experience, discover and understand Eindhoven. The ambition is for the Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven to open in 6 to 8 years.

Why this is
so specialThe Rijksmuseum is more than a museum. With a collection of more than one million objects, it connects art, history and people. The fact that Eindhoven has been chosen says a lot about where the city is now. Eindhoven is no longer just a city of technology, but also of culture, creativity and quality of life.

According to Dibbits, “the place has been found here to realize the Rijksmuseum”. And that’s no coincidence.

Iconic building in the green
The plans are ambitious. A new, iconic museum building, surrounded by greenery, will be built at a location between Kennedylaan and TU/e. Kennedylaan will be relocated and a public park will be created that is accessible to everyone. A place where culture, nature and city come together, exactly as Eindhoven wants to develop in the coming years.

Collaboration with Brainport
The arrival of the Rijksmuseum is closely linked to Brainport Eindhoven. ASML will act as one of the founders and will contribute for a long time. TU/e, other educational institutions and the Van Abbemuseum also play a role. This creates a unique collaboration between technology, education and art.

Eindhoven reverses the classic model: don’t wait for The Hague, but take the initiative yourself. The region is investing heavily, with a construction budget of approximately 80 million euros, and expects other partners, companies, the province and ultimately the national government to join.

What does this mean for Eindhoven (and for you)?
The region will continue to grow towards more than one million inhabitants in the coming years. With facilities such as the Rijksmuseum, Eindhoven will become more attractive to international talents, but above all richer for the current residents. Culture is not a luxury here, but an essential part of pleasant living in a growing city.

Together with the plans below, a city will be created that is becoming increasingly important nationally and internationally.

  • the Evoluon as a Future Lab
  • Strengthening the design ecosystem
  • new nature reserves such as De Peel and the Groote Heide
  • and a possible large event location
