Woensel West, located in the west of Eindhoven, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a former Philips working-class neighborhood to a modern, vibrant and colorful community.

In the past, Woensel West was known for its problems, including prostitution and crime. After the departure of Philips from Strijp-S , many residents became unemployed, which led to alternative sources of income and social challenges. The district was plagued by traffic jams in the streets, drug deals and street prostitution, while cafes served as meeting places for criminal activities, resulting in an unsafe environment.

In 2007, all problem neighborhoods in the Netherlands were identified by the government, and ten-year plans were drawn up to tackle the problems. This led to the establishment of Buurtonderneming Woensel West, in which representatives of housing corporations, residents’ councils and the municipality worked together. The result is impressively visible. There is now a special square for prostitution, many cafes have closed, the primary school has been given a new location, and many old houses have been replaced by new buildings with fresh colors, lots of greenery and beautiful murals, giving the neighborhood an open and inviting appearance.

The first renovated area, now known as Volta Galvani, exudes a Mediterranean atmosphere, with an imposing entrance gate and a lively ambiance. Back on the Edisonstraat you will find the Woensel West side stores, a collection of unique shops of local entrepreneurs. These shops can be found at the beginning and at the end of the Edisonstraat. Here you will not find large chains, but rather special boutiques with wooden toys, art, tattoos, foreign delicacies, curiosities, furniture and organic wines. A highlight is KEVN on Galileistraat, a creative space where food, drink and art come together. Opposite KEVN you will find Brooklyn Square, with one of the best pizzerias in the city, La Vita è Bella.

The newest part of this beautiful district is the Celsius Square. With its contemporary architecture and attention to sustainability, this square embodies the renewed spirit of Woensel West. The square serves as a stage for various events, such as markets, performances and cultural festivals, making it a lively and dynamic center of the district. Surrounded by newer local shops, restaurants and cafes, Celsius Square also offers plenty of opportunity to enjoy delicious meals, cozy drinks and local delicacies.

During various tours you will pass through this trendy neighborhood. For example, during the E-Fatbike tour Eindhoven and surroundings, the Dutch Design Tour and the Street Art Tour.
